Colin Williams became interested in LETS around 1990. Since then he has published a large number of articles about this particular type of a community currency. „Bridges into work? An evaluation of Local Exchange Trading Schemes (LETS)“ is one example; it documents an empirical study about LETS schemes in the UK carried out by a research group, in which Colin played an important role.

Colin also paved the way for younger scholars like Gill Seyfang. In 1997 he founded the International Journal of Community Currency Research (IJCCR). Colin and Gill are now the joint editors of this journal.

Currently, Colin serves as Professor of Public Policy in The Management School of Sheffield University. In recent years the focus of his research interest has changed. He now takes a broad angle approach towards the variety of different aspects of the informal economy. Over the years Colin has been specifically interested in issues regarding local and regional development. Another leitmotif in his writings has been the distinction between labour (in the established capitalist economy) and work (undeclared, cash-in-hand, LETS transactions etc.). He conceptualises this theoretically and investigates implications for public policy.
